A CYCLING guide launched in Wollongong yesterday is designed to showcase the city's natural beauty.

During the launch, Wollongong Lord Mayor Alex Darling said the cycling maps would help boost the city's domestic and international profile.

Tourism Wollongong general manager Greg Binskin said the guide was designed to showcase some of the most spectacular scenery, beaches and historic trips available in Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Lake Illawarra as well as promote a fun and healthy way for families and tourists to discover Wollongong and the Illawarra.

A substantial economic flow-on was expected from the guide because it was likely to drive more kiosk, cafe and restaurant development along the foreshore.

Mr Binskin said the cycling guide gave tourists a different way to explore the Wollongong area and provided a complete package, including safety tips.

The rides in the brochure vary from 7km to 15km one way. Cycleways, shared roads, rest areas and amenities are also clearly marked.

The guide will be distributed through schools, libraries, accommodation outlets, tourist attractions and cycle shops in the Illawarra and the NSW visitor information centre network. It can also be seen on the Tourism Wollongong website.

Mr Binskin said the guide would not have been possible without the help of the IMB Community Foundation.
