Conversations with My Gardener(2007, France) SBS Two, 9pmIn this warm-hearted film from veteran director Jean Becker, a painter (Daniel Auteuil) turns his back on Paris and returns to his family home after his parents have died. A childhood acquaintance (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) becomes his gardener and friendship blossoms between the two men.Chouchou(2003, France) SBS Two, 10.50pmWoohoo! Not Lily Chou-Chou from All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001) but a curious tale concerning a cross-dresser from Africa who manages to insinuate himself into France posing as a Chilean refugee fleeing the repressive regime of General Pinochet. Father Leon, a liberal-thinking priest, and his assistant Brother Jean, a reformed drug addict, give Chouchou sanctuary and find him employment in the consulting rooms of psychotherapist Dr Nicole Milovavovich. Dr Nicole consents to him staying in drag at work. He's further regaled by a second job at the Apocalypse, a transvestite club. There he meets Stanislas, the love of his life. Some agreeable slapstick and sitcom interludes enhance an otherwise frothy comedy.Gambling House(1951) ABC, 1.30am (Tue)Victor Mature as Marc Fury €“ you beauty. This will be high-cholesterol stuff, with a heavy dab of Brylcreem on the margins! Fury is a foreign gambler who is framed by crime boss Joe Farrow (William Bendix) to take the fall for a murder orchestrated by Farrow's thugs. Fury beats the rap but further trouble emerges when Farrow tips off the law that he's an illegal alien. Enter scrumptious social worker/do-gooder Lynn Warren (Terry Moore), spouting the usual flannel about the American Dream. A gullible judge writes him a visa and all's well that ends well. Only in America.
